Parvovirus: Health Alert Winter 2007! We are currently seeing a surge in the amount of parvoviral enteritis cases in puppies from West Kauai. The recent heavy rains seem to have activated the viruses that are in our environment. Although most cases are with unvaccinated puppies, we have had illness and death in unvaccinated adult dogs. Signs of parvovirus infection may include loss of appetite, vomitting, fever and diarrhea (with or without blood). Early detection and early treatment are the keys to surviving the disease. Prevention is the best option with a series of vaccinations starting in pups from 8 weeks of age, with monthly boosters until 16 weeks of age. Unvaccinated animals should not be allowed to visit public areas that may expose them to this deadly virus. |
